Biography

Blessed Albertina Berkenbrock, also known as Albertina Serva de Deus, was a lay person in the diocese of Tubarão, Brazil. Born on 11 April 1919 in São Luís, Imaruí, Santa Catarina, Brazil, she was raised in a pious family that ensured she had a strong foundation in the Catholic faith.

Albertina's spiritual journey began with her Baptism on 25 May 1919, followed by her Confirmation on 9 March 1925. She made her First Communion on 16 August 1928, further deepening her connection with God and the Eucharist.

Tragically, at the age of 12, Albertina faced a horrific incident that would ultimately lead to her martyrdom. One of her father's employees attempted to rape her. However, displaying immense courage and unwavering commitment to preserving her chastity, Albertina valiantly fought back. Realizing that his evil intentions would be exposed, the attacker viciously killed Albertina by stabbing her in the heart with a pen knife.

Her untimely death on 15 June 1931 in São Luís, Imaruí, Santa Catarina, Brazil, severed a promising life, but it also paved the way for her veneration as a martyr in defense of chastity. Recognizing her sanctity and the powerful witness of her sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI declared her venerable on 16 December 2006. The pontiff further beatified her on 20 October 2007, a celebration led by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins in the cathedral of Tubarão, Brazil.
