Biography

Blessed Alerinus De Rambaldis, also known as Alerino Rembaudi, was born into the Italian nobility in the late 14th century in Alba, Cuneo, Italy. From his youth, he was deeply drawn to religious life and dedicated himself to the service of God. His scholarly inclinations and spiritual fervor led him to become a canon of the cathedral of Alba.

Recognizing his piety and commitment to the faith, Pope Martin V chose Alerinus as the bishop of Alba on 10 September 1419. In this role, Alerinus served his diocese diligently for over 36 years, leaving a lasting impact on the spiritual and cultural life of the region.

Blessed Alerinus is particularly renowned for a remarkable event that occurred on 31 January 1429. Guided by a vision, he successfully rediscovered the long-lost burial site and relics of Blessed Theobald Roggeri. It is said that on the following morning, the bells of local churches rang out on their own, a sign of divine approval and joy in the rediscovery of the relics. This event further strengthened Alerinus' devotion to his calling and his commitment to upholding the sanctity of the Church.

Alerinus demonstrated his leadership and organizing abilities by conducting the Synod of Alba in 1434. This important gathering brought together clergy and laity from across the diocese to discuss matters of faith and church discipline, fostering unity and spiritual growth among the faithful.

Recognizing the value of the Augustinian order, Alerinus invited them to work in his diocese. He provided unwavering support to the Augustinians, enabling them to carry out their important pastoral and evangelical work in Alba. Additionally, Alerinus played a crucial role in promoting the vocation and work of Blessed Margaret of Savoy, a notable Dominican.

In 1446, Alerinus laid the foundation stone of a Dominican monastery established by Blessed Margaret of Savoy. This act further emphasized his commitment to the growth and vitality of religious life and contributed to the spiritual enrichment of the community.

On 27 April 1455, Alerinus performed another significant act by translating the relics of Saint Frontiniano and other holy individuals to the cathedral in Alba. By doing so, he symbolically brought these revered figures closer to the faithful and proclaimed 27 April as the feast day of the patrons of the city of Alba.
