Blessed Andrés Giménez Galera, also known as Father Andrés Giménez, was born on 25 January 1904 in Rambla de Oria, Almería, Spain. He showed great devotion to God from an early age and felt a strong calling to the priesthood. After completing his studies, Andrés was ordained as a priest in 1926.
He began his ministry serving in a parish in Almería, Spain, where he exhibited a fervent dedication to the spiritual well-being of his parishioners. Despite facing numerous challenges, Father Andrés remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading the message of God's love.
In 1935, Andrés joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation known for its work with young people. However, he had only just begun his novitiate when the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936. In the midst of this violent conflict, anti-Christian forces targeted priests and religious individuals, persecuting them for their faith.
Father Andrés found himself imprisoned by these anti-Christian forces, but even in captivity, he continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, offering solace and guidance during their time of hardship. His selflessness and unwavering faith inspired those around him, providing a source of strength in the midst of the chaos.
Tragically, on 27 July 1936, during a prisoner transport, Andrés's captors noticed him carrying a crucifix and demanded that he discard it. Unyielding in his devotion, Father Andrés refused to part with the symbol of Christ's sacrifice. In a horrific act of violence, the militiamen then took his life.
Andrés Giménez Galera's martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to Christ. He was canonically recognized as a martyr on 26 June 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI, who acknowledged the sanctity and sacrifice of his life. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, establishing him as Blessed Andrés Giménez Galera.
