He was born on 26 January 1736 in La Poitevinière, situated in the province of Maine-et-Loire. Antoine lived during a tumultuous time in France's history, as the country was engulfed in the violent persecutions of the French Revolution.
Little is known about Antoine Fournier's life before the revolution. However, it is believed that he was a devout Catholic who lived his faith with sincerity and dedication. As a craftsman, he undoubtedly utilized his talents to contribute to the well-being of his family and community.
Tragically, during the French Revolution, when the Catholic Church and its followers faced severe persecution, Antoine's unwavering faith earned him a place among the martyrs. He was unjustly accused and subsequently arrested for his religious beliefs. On 12 January 1794, in Avrillé, Maine-et-Loire, Antoine was executed by a firing squad.
His feast day is commemorated on 12 January, marking the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also honored on 2 January as one of the Martyrs of Anjou, a region in western France. Pope John Paul II, acknowledging his heroic witness to the Catholic faith, officially recognized Antoine Fournier as venerable on 9 June 1983 with a papal decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, on 19 February 1984, Pope John Paul II beatified Antoine Fournier in Rome, Italy.
