Biography

Blessed Bonaventura Reixach Vilarú was a devout Catholic and a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 24 April 1860 in the town of Olost, Barcelona, Spain, into a deeply religious family.

From a young age, Bonaventura exhibited a strong faith and a desire to serve God. This led him to enter the Claretian novitiate, where he began his religious formation. On 19 March 1888, he professed his vows as a member of the Claretians, dedicating himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Throughout his religious life, Blessed Bonaventura Reixach Vilarú lived a simple and humble existence, striving to imitate the virtues of Jesus Christ. He was known for his unwavering commitment to prayer, his love for the Eucharist, and his genuine care for the people he encountered.

Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many faithful Catholics, including Blessed Bonaventura, experienced intense persecution for their faith. On 18 October 1936, Bonaventura was martyred for refusing to renounce his religious beliefs and align with the ideologies of the opposing factions. He was executed in Cervera, Lleida, Spain, steadfastly embracing his faith until his last breath.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed Bonaventura Reixach Vilarú, along with 109 other Spanish Claretian Martyrs, were recognized and celebrated by the Catholic Church. On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis decreed their martyrdom, affirming their devotion to Christ and their sacrifice for the sake of their faith.

Blessed Bonaventura was subsequently beatified on 21 October 2017, in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, the beatification highlighted Bonaventura's exemplary life as a dedicated Claretian and his courageous witness to the Gospel values, even in the face of severe persecution.

Today, Blessed Bonaventura Reixach Vilarú is venerated as a martyr and a model of faith, inspiring Catholics worldwide to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to live authentically as disciples of Christ. His feast day is celebrated on 18 October, commemorating his martyrdom, and also on 1 February, together with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.
