Death: October 7, 1990
Blessed Chiara Badano, also known as Luce Badano, was a young lay woman born on 29 October 1971 in Savona, Italy. She grew up in the Diocese of Aqui Terme, the daughter of Ruggero Badano, a truck driver, and Maria Teresa Caviglia. Chiara was known for her kind, happy, and pious nature, and she had a wide range of interests including tennis, swimming, hiking, singing, and dancing. Initially, she aspired to become a flight attendant.
At the tender age of nine, Chiara became a member of the Focolare Movement, a Catholic lay movement that promotes the spirituality of unity. Through this association, she deepened her spiritual life and developed a strong commitment to living the Gospel values in everyday life.
When she turned 16, Chiara started experiencing a strong desire to pursue religious life. However, around the same time, she received a devastating diagnosis. She was diagnosed with cancer in her shoulder. Despite the diagnosis, Chiara's faith and determination remained steadfast. She continued to trust in God's plan for her life and decided to unite her suffering with that of Jesus Christ.
Even in the face of illness, Chiara insisted on becoming a missionary, desiring to bring the message of God's love to others. Unfortunately, the cancer rapidly spread throughout her body, affecting her spine and causing her to lose the use of her legs. Realizing that her dreams of missionary work could not be fulfilled in the way she had hoped, Chiara bravely accepted her fate and redirected her focus towards supporting her family and friends and offering her suffering as a testament of love and faith.
During her final months, Chiara spent much of her time in prayer, deepening her relationship with God and selflessly comforting others around her. Her unwavering faith, joy, and radiant love for God inspired all who encountered her, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Blessed Chiara Badano, a beacon of hope and true Christian witness, passed away on 7 October 1990 in Sassello, Savona, Italy, at the young age of 18, due to complications related to her illness. The impact of her life and testimony continued to resonate, leading Pope Benedict XVI to declare her venerable on 3 July 2008 and, later, to beatify her on 25 September 2010.
Today, Blessed Chiara Badano serves as an inspiration to young people around the world, showing them the transformative power of faith, love, and acceptance in the face of adversity. Her feast day is celebrated on 29 October, honoring the day of her birth, as a reminder of her remarkable and courageous life.
