Biography

Blessed Elias of Bourdeilles, also known as Elie or Hélie, was born in 1407 to the French nobility in Périgord, France. At a young age, he felt called to a life of devotion and entered the Franciscan Order when he was only ten years old. Courageous and dedicated, Elie quickly excelled in his studies and demonstrated a deep spirituality.

After completing his formation, Elie was ordained as a priest and later appointed as the Bishop of Périgord in 1437. During his tenure as bishop, he showed immense compassion for the poor and marginalized, working tirelessly to improve their conditions and bring about social justice.

One of the most notable contributions by Blessed Elias was his involvement in the case of Saint Joan of Arc. In 1452, he authored a report that played a crucial role in vindicating the Maid of Orleans, who had been unjustly accused of heresy. Elias meticulously investigated the accusations against Joan and concluded that she was a faithful and righteous woman, ultimately leading to the restoration of her reputation.

Due to his outstanding leadership and the impact of his work, Elie was appointed as the Archbishop of Tours, France in 1468. His unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith and his defense of the Church's rights against the power of the king earned him the respect and admiration of many.

In recognition of his wisdom and spiritual guidance, Blessed Elias was chosen as the confessor of King Louis XI, becoming a trusted advisor to the monarch. Despite his close relationship with the king, he fearlessly defended the rights of the Church, ensuring that its teachings and authority were upheld.

Elias of Bourdeilles was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1483, a well-deserved acknowledgment of his immense contributions to the Church. Throughout his life, he remained a model of holiness, showing humility and integrity in all his actions.

Blessed Elias of Bourdeilles died peacefully in 1484 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of piety, compassion, and unwavering devotion to the Church. Although the formal process for his beatification, which began in 1526, was never completed, he has been venerated and referred to as "Blessed" for centuries.

The feast day of Blessed Elias of Bourdeilles is celebrated on July 5th, honoring his remarkable life and recognizing the impact he had on the Church and society.
