Biography

Blessed Elisa Martinez, also known as Sister Maria Lucia, was born on 25 March 1905 in Galatina, Lecce, Italy. From a young age, Elisa felt a strong calling to religious life, and at the age of 23, she joined the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in Angers, France. On 29 September 1930, she made her first profession and took the name Sister Maria Lucia. She was then assigned to the Good Shepherd house in Chieti, Italy.

However, Sister Maria Lucia's journey in religious life faced a setback when she fell seriously ill with a severe respiratory problem. Due to her illness, she was ordered to return to her family for a period of recovery. After her health improved, Elisa moved to Betronio, Italy, where she dedicated herself to aiding and teaching the poor. She also served as a catechist in her parish, sharing the teachings of the Catholic faith.

Elisa's work in Betronio attracted many young women who shared her passion for serving the marginalized. They formed an informal group known as the Sisters of Catechism. Recognizing the need for their type of work, the group relocated to the archdiocese of Argento, Italy. On 20 March 1938, they transformed into a formal congregation called the Pious Union of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (Pia Unione delle Suore dell’Immacolata).

Inspired by the Gospel passage from Matthew 25:40, which states, "Whatever you have done unto the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done unto me," the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception dedicated themselves to serving the marginalized and abandoned. On 14 August 1941, the archbishop officially established the group as the Congregation of the Daughters of Saint Mary of Leuca. Sister Elisa, now known as Mother Elisa, became the leader of the congregation.

The Daughters of Saint Mary of Leuca received papal approval in 1943, affirming the value of their work and mission. They focused their efforts on caring for outcasts, prisoners, single mothers, abandoned children, and refugees during World War II. Mother Elisa's leadership helped the Congregation to grow steadily throughout her life.

Blessed Elisa Martinez dedicated her life to the service of others, demonstrating immense compassion and love for the most vulnerable members of society. She nurtured and led the Daughters of Saint Mary of Leuca, guiding them to continue their important work in various countries to this day.

Blessed Elisa Martinez passed away on 8 February 1991 in Rome, Italy, due to natural causes. Her life of exemplary virtues and service was recognized and commended by Pope Francis, who venerated her on 13 October 2021 through a decree of heroic virtues. She was then beatified on 25 June 2023 in a ceremony held in the square of the Basilica of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae in Santa Maria de Leuca, Italy. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, further honoring the life and legacy of this devoted servant of God.
