Biography

Blessed Emilio Puente González, also known as Brother Bernardo, was born on 5 March 1911 in San Andrés de Montearados, Burgos, Spain. He hailed from a pious family and was baptized into the Catholic faith just one day after his birth. Emilio's religious upbringing continued as he was confirmed at the young age of 5.

Growing up, Emilio had a strong connection to the religious life. He had an aunt who was a member of the Piarist order, along with three uncles and three cousins who were members of the Congregation of San Pedro ad Vincula. Inspired by his family's example and his own deep faith, Emilio decided to follow the path of religious life himself.

Emilio received his education from his uncle, who happened to be a diocesan priest. This nurturing environment not only enriched his spiritual life but also provided him with the necessary training and guidance to pursue a vocation within the Church.

In pursuit of his calling, Emilio joined the Congregation in Marseille, France, and made his profession on 19 March 1930. With great dedication and commitment, he delved into his studies in preparation for the priesthood. However, his life took a tragic turn with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a conflict marked by severe hostility towards religious persons.

Emilio, valiantly remaining faithful to his religious convictions, found himself imprisoned and ultimately martyred for his religious beliefs. He faced tremendous persecution for daring to live out his vocation during this challenging period in history.

On 27 July 1936, Emilio Puente González met his untimely death on Montjuic, Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering commitment to his faith demonstrated remarkable courage and an unshakable devotion to God and his calling. Emilio's virtuous life and sacrificial death exemplify the heights of holiness to which individuals can aspire.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Emilio Puente González as Blessed on 10 November 2018. The beatification ceremony took place in the beautiful Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. This solemn occasion marked a significant milestone in the process of honoring Emilio's life, faith, and sacrifice.

Blessed Emilio Puente González, also remembered as Brother Bernardo, is venerated and celebrated on his feast day, 27 July. His life remains an inspiration for Catholics and all people of faith, reminding us of the courage and resolve required to live out our beliefs in challenging circumstances.
