Biography

Blessed Esclaramunda of Majorca, also known as Esclaramunda of Foix, Esclarmonde, or Esclarmonda, was born in 1255 in Majorca, an island located in modern-day Spain. She was the daughter of Count Roger IV of Foix and Brunisenda Cardona, two influential nobles of the time.

At the age of twenty, Esclaramunda married King James II of Majorca on September 1, 1275. The couple ruled over the Kingdom of Majorca with great dedication and care. Esclaramunda's grace and wisdom endeared her to the people, and she became known as a compassionate queen, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Despite her royal position, Esclaramunda remained humble and devout, leading a life of piety and commitment to the Catholic faith. In 1291, she felt a deep calling to dedicate herself completely to God and joined the Mercedarians, a religious order known for their mission of redeeming captive Christians. Esclaramunda settled at the Monastery of San Pedro de Amer, where she wholeheartedly embraced the order's mission and became a great protector and benefactor of the Mercedarians.

Esclaramunda's charitable nature and strong faith profoundly influenced those around her. She used her royal wealth and influence to support the Mercedarians' efforts in ransoming Christian captives from Muslim-controlled territories. Esclaramunda's commitment to the order made her a revered figure among the Mercedarians, who attributed many miracles and interventions to her intercession on behalf of their cause.

In addition to her spiritual role as a protector of the Mercedarians, Esclaramunda maintained her regal presence. She wore a crown and held a scepter, symbols of her past role as Queen of Majorca. These regal attributes were not seen as separate from her religious identity but rather integrated into her representation as a blessed figure.

Blessed Esclaramunda of Majorca passed away in Perpignan, Spain in 1315, at the age of sixty. She died peacefully from natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of profound devotion and selflessness. Although she has not yet been officially recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church, her exemplary life of piety and dedication to the Mercedarians has led to her being honored as a blessed figure by many people, particularly among the members of the religious order she so fervently supported.

Esclaramunda's feast day is celebrated by the Mercedarians on October 22nd, as a reminder of her devout life and commitments. Her story continues to inspire individuals to live lives of faith, compassion, and selflessness, drawing strength from her unwavering devotion to God and her unwavering dedication to the service of others.
