Biography

Blessed Frowin of Engelberg, also known as Frowin II or Frodowin, was a Benedictine monk who played an integral role in the spiritual and intellectual development of the Engelberg Abbey, located in Unterwalden, Switzerland. Although little is known about his early life, it is believed that he was born in the 12th century.

Frowin's journey in the monastic life led him to Saint Blaise Abbey in Badan, Germany, where he devoted himself to prayer, study, and contemplation. During this time, his exceptional knowledge and piety captured the attention of many, and he may have also spent a period in Einsiedeln Abbey, located in Switzerland.

In 1146, Frowin was appointed as the abbot of Engelberg Abbey, a position of great responsibility and authority. Under his leadership, the abbey flourished both spiritually and intellectually. Frowin's dedication to learning and education prompted him to establish a library and scriptorium within the abbey's premises. These initiatives not only preserved and enriched the theological knowledge of the time but also allowed for the creation and dissemination of new works.
