Biography

Blessed Gertrude of Altenberg, also known as Gertrude of Thuringia, was born in 1227, the daughter of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Louis IV, the landgrave of Thuringia. She received her education at Altenberg Abbey and, inspired by the example of her mother's piety and dedication, Gertrude decided to devote herself to a life of religious service.

At a young age, Gertrude entered the Cistercian order at Altenberg Abbey. Renowned for her deep spirituality and exceptional leadership skills, she was chosen as abbess of the monastery while still in her youth. Gertrude proved to be a wise and compassionate leader, guiding the community for an impressive fifty years.

Under Gertrude's guidance, Altenberg Abbey flourished, becoming a center of prayer, learning, and charitable works. She emphasized the importance of humility, simplicity, and devotion in the daily lives of the nuns, setting an example through her own words and actions. Gertrude placed a strong emphasis on the communal aspect of monastic life, fostering an environment of love, support, and mutual encouragement among the sisters.

Throughout her life, Gertrude exemplified the virtues of faith, humility, and selflessness. She lived a life of prayer and contemplation, seeking a strong personal relationship with God. Gertrude's sanctity and the impact of her life were recognized relatively soon after her death. Pope Clement VI beatified her in 1311, affirming her cultus and its limited veneration specifically within the Altenberg monastery. Later, on July 11, 1729, Pope Benedict XIII further confirmed the cultus of Blessed Gertrude, extending veneration and recognition to the entire Cistercian Order.
