Death: January 22, 1922
Blessed Giuseppe Nascimbeni, also known as Joseph Nascimbeni, was born on 22 March 1851 in Torri del Benaco, Verona, Italy. He was the son of a carpenter and grew up in a humble background. As a young man, Giuseppe felt a strong calling to serve God and dedicated his life to the Catholic faith.
After completing his studies, Giuseppe was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Verona in 1874. He began his ministry as an elementary school teacher at San Pietro di Lavagano, Italy, where he shared his knowledge and faith with the children for three years.
In 1882, Father Giuseppe was appointed as the parish priest at Castelletto del Garda, Italy. This area was impoverished and isolated from the modern world, lacking basic utilities and infrastructure. Recognizing the immense challenges faced by the community, Father Giuseppe tirelessly worked to improve their living conditions.
With great determination, he initiated several projects to bring progress and prosperity to the region. Father Giuseppe oversaw the installation of better plumbing and electrical services, connecting the people of Castelletto del Garda to the outside world by mail and telegraph. Additionally, he started a craft school, empowering the youth with practical skills and providing them with opportunities for a better future.
Father Giuseppe's dedication extended beyond material improvements. Seeing the need for support in his parish, he founded the Little Sisters of the Holy Family. When the Ursulines were unable to work in Castelletto del Garda, the Little Sisters stepped in to assist Father Giuseppe in his charitable endeavors. They quickly grew in number, and by 1909, with the approval of the Pope, they already had 64 houses and 320 sisters working with the sick and elderly. Today, their compassionate work continues in several countries.
In 1916, Father Giuseppe suffered a stroke, which left him wheelchair-bound for the final five years of his life. Despite this physical limitation, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to inspire those around him with his unwavering devotion to God.
On 22 January 1922, Blessed Giuseppe Nascimbeni passed away in Castelletto del Garda, Verona, Italy, from natural causes. His extraordinary virtues and legacy of service to the poor and marginalized were recognized by Pope John Paul II, who declared him venerable on 17 February 1984.
Further recognizing his holiness and the impact of his work, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Giuseppe Nascimbeni on 17 April 1988. His feast day is celebrated on 22 January each year, honoring his dedication to his community, teaching, and spiritual guidance.
Blessed Giuseppe Nascimbeni's life serves as a powerful example of how one person's love for God and their fellow human beings can transform and uplift an entire community. His legacy continues to inspire others to selflessly strive for justice, compassion, and service in their own lives.
