Biography

Blessed Henry of Treviso, also known as Henry of Bolzano, Henry of Bozen, Arrigo, Heinrich, or Rigo, was born around 1250 in Bolzano, Italy. He came from humble beginnings and led a simple life as a married lay man and father. Henry worked as a day laborer to provide for his family.

Tragically, Henry experienced great sorrow when both his wife and child passed away at a young age. This loss deeply affected him, causing him to lose interest in the pursuits of worldly life. Despite his grief, Henry continued to work diligently as a laborer, giving away all that he could spare to those in need. Despite his limited means and lack of formal education, he attended daily Mass and devoted his spare time to prayer.

As the years passed, Henry's dedication to helping the poor grew even stronger. In his selflessness, he worked tirelessly to assist those who were even less fortunate than himself. Eventually, Henry transformed his life further by becoming a beggar, humbly asking for alms and giving away all possessions that he did not require.

On June 10, 1315, Blessed Henry of Treviso peacefully passed away in Treviso, Italy from natural causes. He had earned immense love and respect from the people of Treviso, who held him in high regard. In fact, at his death, his tiny room was completely stripped of the straw that served as his bed, which had been his only possession. This act demonstrated the adoration and veneration bestowed upon him by the community.

Blessed Henry's reputation for holiness endured long after his death. On July 23, 1750, Pope Benedict XIV beatified him. Before the beatification could be completed, no fewer than 276 miracles were reported and recorded, further confirming the devotion and intercession granted by Blessed Henry.

Blessed Henry of Treviso, through his life of selflessness, exemplifies the virtues of compassion, charity, and devotion. Despite his own personal hardships, he devoted himself to helping those in need and drawing closer to God through prayer.
