Biography

Blessed Jacinto Gómez Peña, also known as Brother Joaquín, was born on 26 July 1895 in Alfoz de Bricia, Campino, Burgos, Spain. He was raised in a devout and pious family, deeply rooted in their Catholic faith. Jacinto's family had a history of religious involvement as his brother and uncle were both members of the Piarists, a religious community dedicated to the education of children and youth.

Inspired by the religious examples within his family, Jacinto felt a calling to dedicate his life to serving God. In 1910, he joined the Congregation of San Pedro ad Vincula, a religious order founded in Spain in the 17th century. Jacinto made his initial vows in 1912, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He continued his formation within the congregation, striving for spiritual growth and deepening his commitment to the Gospel.

However, amidst his religious journey, Jacinto's path took a detour due to the outbreak of the First World War. He had to interrupt his religious studies and fulfill his military service obligations. Despite this interruption, Jacinto remained steadfast in his faith and continued to yearn for a life dedicated to serving God and others.

After completing his military service, Jacinto resumed his religious formation, and on his journey, he became known as Brother Joaquín within the congregation. He exhibited a deep love for contemplation, prayer, and a commitment to the virtues of humility and charity.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, leading to significant persecution of Catholics and religious communities. Brother Joaquín, along with many other faithful, endured immense challenges and threats to their lives due to their religious affiliation. Despite the dangers, he exhibited great courage and unwavering faith, choosing to remain true to his Christian beliefs.

In July 1936, while serving within the Congregation of San Pedro ad Vincula, Brother Joaquín was captured by militiamen who were hostile to the Catholic Church. He was unjustly imprisoned, subjected to harsh conditions, and endured immense suffering. Finally, on the morning of 27 July 1936, around 3 am, Brother Joaquín was executed on the banks of the Llobregat River in PallejÖ, Barcelona, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith.

Blessed Jacinto Gómez Peña's martyrdom was a testament to his devotion to God and his unwavering commitment to the principles of love, justice, and faith. His sacrifice and courage during a time of great hostility towards the Catholic Church exemplify his profound holiness. Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 18 December 2017, and later, on 10 November 2018, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu.

Blessed Jacinto Gómez Peña serves as an inspirational figure, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and the courage to stand firm in the face of adversity. His devotion and sacrifice continue to inspire Catholics around the world to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to live lives of holiness and love.
