Biography

Blessed Jaime Ortiz Alzueta, also known as Jaime Alzuetaz, was born on May 24, 1913, in Pamplona, Navarra, Spain. As a young child, Jaime exhibited a wild and undisciplined nature, but at the age of 12, he was entrusted to the care of the Salesians, a religious order known for their work in education. Under their guidance, Jaime's life began to undergo a transformation.

However, during his teenage years, Jaime decided to leave school and work as a mechanic. He embraced the secular lifestyle, indulging in reckless behavior. It was during this time that he witnessed the misery and suffering experienced by his fellow co-workers. Deeply moved by their plight, he realized that there must be a better way to live.

Motivated by a desire for personal growth and a genuine concern for others, Jaime returned to the Salesians and expressed his desire to join them as a co-adjutor, a lay religious brother with no plans for ordination. In 1932, he made his final vows, fully committing himself to the service of God and humanity.

Jaime Alzueta played an active role in the Salesians' educational efforts, teaching in their technical and occupational schools. His dedication and passion for his work were evident in his interactions with students and colleagues. He sought to impart not only knowledge and skills but also the values of compassion, integrity, and faith.

In 1936, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Jaime Alzueta faced persecution for his religious beliefs. On the night of July 27, 1936, in Barcelona, he was tragically shot, becoming one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón.

Recognizing his holy sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared Jaime Alzueta a martyr on December 20, 1999. The beatification ceremony followed on March 11, 2001, reaffirming his virtuous life and ultimate sacrifice for his faith.

Blessed Jaime Ortiz Alzueta's story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformational power of faith. From a wild and undisciplined young man, he embraced a life of service, dedicating himself to the education and upliftment of others. His martyrdom in the face of persecution stands as an inspiration to all, encouraging us to live our lives with courage, integrity, and compassion. We honor his memory and celebrate his feast days on July 27 and September 22, together with the other Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón.
