Biography

Blessed James of Viterbo, also known as James Capocci, James of Naples, Giacomo, Jacobus, and Doctor Speculativus, was born around 1255 in Viterbo, Italy. Little is known about his early life and family background.

James embarked on a path of spiritual devotion and entered the Augustinian hermitage at Viterbo. It was within this religious community that he began his studies and eventually received his doctorate from the prestigious University of Paris. Armed with his theological knowledge, James became a renowned teacher of theology in both Paris, France, and Naples, Italy.

In 1302, his exceptional intellect and virtuous character led to his appointment as the Bishop of Benevento, Italy. Recognized for his dedication to his episcopal duties, James quickly gained the respect and admiration of the faithful in Benevento. His pastoral care centered on promoting piety, good morals, and the welfare of the church and its people.

Just a year later, in 1303, James was appointed as the Archbishop of Naples, Italy. Under his leadership, the archdiocese flourished spiritually and saw numerous charitable initiatives established. He was known for his compassion and unwavering commitment to the Gospel, tirelessly working for the spiritual renewal of his flock.

Throughout his life, James of Viterbo demonstrated an unwavering devotion to the Catholic faith, nurturing the faithful and guiding them towards a deeper relationship with God.
