Biography

Blessed James Salomone, also known as Father of the Poor, James of Salomonio, James Salomonelli, James Salomonio, James Salomonius, and James the Venetian, was born in 1231 in Venice, Italy. He was born into a noble family as an only child. Unfortunately, his father passed away when he was very young, and his mother decided to join the Cistercian order as a nun, leaving James in the care of his grandmother.

Raised by his grandmother, James developed a deep spiritual inclination from a young age. He was tutored by a Cistercian monk who taught him the practice of meditation. This early religious education had a profound impact on James, shaping his future as a devoted servant of God.

Upon reaching adulthood, James made the decision to pursue a vocation as a Dominican friar. On his journey to the Santa Maria Celeste monastery in Venice, he encountered numerous poor individuals along the way. Moved with compassion, James gave away all of his wealth, keeping only enough to purchase books. When he arrived at the monastery, he encountered a lay-brother in need of clothing and selflessly gave him the remaining money, choosing to enter the monastery with no possessions.

James spent 66 years as a Dominican friar, serving in various houses in and around Venice. Throughout his years in religious life, he held several important positions within the Dominican order. However, it was his gift for spiritual direction that gained him considerable renown. Fearing undue attention and seeking a more humble life, James transferred to the impoverished and strict observance house in Forli, Italy.

In Forli, James dedicated himself to the well-being of the sick, spending numerous hours hearing confessions and providing comfort and guidance. His commitment to the poor and destitute was unwavering, as he gave away anything that came into his possession, viewing it as an opportunity to aid those in need.

Blessed James Salomone was also known for his reputation as a remarkable healer. Numerous miraculous cures were attributed to his intervention, offering hope and solace to those who sought his assistance. His deep devotion to God and his fellow human beings made him a beacon of compassion and love.

Representations of Blessed James Salomone often depict him as a Dominican friar surrounded by a multitude of petitioners, reflecting his role as a spiritual guide and intercessor. Another common representation portrays him holding a staff and a book, with the Christ-child over his heart, symbolizing his deep love for Christ and his dedication to his Dominican vocation. Additionally, he is sometimes depicted holding a heart adorned with the letters "IHS," representing his profound devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Blessed James Salomone passed away on 31 March 1314 in Forli, Italy, after battling cancer. He was laid to rest in the chapel at Forli, where he had dedicated his life to serving others. The Catholic Church recognized his sanctity, and he was beatified by Pope Clement VII in 1526.
