Biography

Blessed Joaquín Puente González, also known as Brother Jacinto, was born on 25 December 1915 in San Andrés de Montearados, Burgos, Spain. He was baptized just three days after his birth and later confirmed on 13 October 1922.

Following in the footsteps of his brother, Joaquín entered the Congregation of San Pedro ad Vincula. He began his novitiate in Marseille, France, on 23 September 1934 and made his profession in 1935. He devoted himself to serving the Church and society as a whole.

After completing his education, Brother Jacinto became a school teacher in Barcelona, Spain. He took it upon himself to educate and guide young minds in the Catholic faith, becoming a pillar of support and knowledge for his students.

However, during the tumultuous times of the Spanish Civil War, Joaquín's life took a tragic turn. As the conflict intensified, tensions ran high, and many religious individuals, including Brother Jacinto, faced persecution for their faith. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and unjustly sentenced to death by militiamen for his unwavering commitment to Catholicism.

On 27 July 1936, around 3 am, Joaquín Puente González met his martyrdom on the banks of the Llobregat River in PallejÖ, Barcelona, Spain. He bravely faced his execution, holding steadfast in his faith until the very end.

Years later, on 18 December 2017, Pope Francis officially venerated Brother Jacinto, recognizing his martyrdom by decree. This marked a significant step towards his beatification. Finally, on 10 November 2018, Joaquín Puente González was beatified by Pope Francis in a grand ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, representing the Holy Father.

Blessed Joaquín Puente González stands as a shining example of unwavering faith and dedication, having given his life as a witness to the Gospel. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire Catholics around the world, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in times of adversity.
