Birth: November 8, 1870
Death: September 8, 1936
Blessed José Castaño Galera, also known as José Castaño, was a devout Catholic priest hailing from the diocese of Almería in Spain. He was born on 8 November 1870 in the town of Bédar, Almería. As a young man, José felt a deep calling to serve the Church and dedicated his life to the priesthood.
After years of diligent study and preparation, José was ordained as a priest of the diocese of Almería. He quickly gained a reputation for his compassion, piety, and commitment to his parishioners. With great love and dedication, he carried out his pastoral duties, offering spiritual guidance, administering the sacraments, and providing care to those in need.
Unfortunately, this period in Spanish history was marked by great political and social turmoil, particularly during the Spanish Civil War. As tensions grew, the Catholic Church came under intense persecution from anti-Catholic factions. Despite the danger he faced, José remained steadfast in his faith and unyielding in his commitment to his flock.
Tragically, on 8 September 1936, Blessed José Castaño Galera was martyred for his unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church. He was executed in the town of Higuera Ureña, Bédar, Almería, where he met his death as a martyr for his Christian beliefs. His courage in the face of persecution and his refusal to renounce his faith have been an inspiration to many.
Recognizing the heroic virtues demonstrated by José Castaño, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 14 June 2016. This decree of martyrdom acknowledged José's martyrdom and affirmed his exemplary way of life. The Holy Father then proceeded to beatify him on 25 March 2017, holding a solemn ceremony in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who represented the Pope on this joyous occasion.
Blessed José Castaño Galera continues to be venerated by the Catholic faithful, particularly on his feast day, which is celebrated on 8 September each year. His life serves as a beacon of faith and an inspiration to all those who encounter his story. May his intercession and example guide us in our own journeys of faith and devotion.
