Death: August 1, 10
Blessed José María Garrigues Hernández, also known as Father Germán of Carcagente, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to serving God and helping the poor. He was born on 12 February 1895 in Carcagente, Valencia, Spain.
José María joined the Capuchin Order and made his profession on 15 August 1912. Recognizing his devotion and his calling to priesthood, he was ordained on 9 February 1919. With a deep commitment to education, Father Germán became a school teacher, finding joy in sharing his knowledge and faith with others.
One of his most significant teaching positions was at the College of San Buenaventura de Totana in Murcia, Spain. He also imparted his wisdom at the Seraphic Seminary of Massamgrell. Known for his compassionate spirit, Father Germán had a special ministry to the poor, providing them with spiritual guidance, education, and material assistance.
Tragically, during the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War, Father Germán was forced into hiding to protect his life and continue his ministry discreetly. However, on 9 August 1936, he was discovered and arrested by those opposed to the Catholic faith. Over the course of a day, he endured beatings and abuse, yet his faith remained steadfast.
During his final moments, on the night of 10 August 1936, Father Germán was dragged to an iron railroad bridge in Carcagente, Valencia. There, he was mercilessly shot for the crime of being a priest. Though faced with such brutality, he demonstrated extraordinary grace by forgiving his executioners. His body was callously thrown into the river, but it was later recovered and laid to rest in the cemetery at Carcagente.
In recognition of his unwavering faith and his martyrdom, Blessed José María Garrigues Hernández was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 20 December 1999, who issued a decree affirming his martyrdom. He was further honored with beatification on 11 March 2001 by the same pontiff. The feast day of Blessed José María is celebrated on 9 August each year.
Blessed José María Garrigues Hernández continues to inspire countless individuals through his selfless dedication, his commitment to education, and his unyielding faith. His life and ultimate sacrifice serve as a profound example of forgiveness, compassion, and the courage to stand firm in the face of persecution.
