Blessed Josep Casals Badía, also known as Blessed Josep Casals, was a devout member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 8 February 1891 in Berga, a town in the region of Barcelona, Spain.
Josep Casals entered the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians, and professed his religious vows on 2 February 1911. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church, living a life of holiness and commitment.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was rampant. Bl. Josep Casals Badía became one of the many victims of this religious persecution. He was martyred for his faith in Gurb, Vic, Barcelona, Spain, on 12 October 1936, losing his life due to the senseless violence inflicted upon him.
His courageous witness to the Catholic faith, even in the face of persecution and death, has been recognized and celebrated within the Catholic Church. Bl. Josep Casals Badía is remembered as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War.
Pope Francis acknowledged the martyrdom of Blessed Josep Casals Badía by issuing a decree of martyrdom on 21 December 2016, venerated his sacrifice. This official recognition by the pope marks a significant step towards his eventual recognition as a saint.
The beatification of Bl. Josep Casals Badía was held on 21 October 2017, at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy See. This special event was a moment of joy and celebration for the Claretian community and the faithful who honor and remember the sacrifice of Bl. Josep Casals Badía.
Blessed Josep Casals Badía's feast day is celebrated on 12 October, the day he was martyred. Additionally, he is also honored on 1 February as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, commemorating the sacrifice of all the Claretian religious who were martyred during the Spanish Civil War.
