Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda was a Catholic priest in the archdiocese of Tarragona, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on February 12, 1899, in Dosaiguas, a small town located in the province of Tarragona.

From a young age, Josep exhibited a strong devotion to his faith and felt a calling to the priesthood. He embarked on his theological studies and was ordained as a priest for the archdiocese of Tarragona. Known for his dedication to his parishioners, he served as a compassionate and caring spiritual leader.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought forth a period of intense persecution and hostility towards the Catholic Church. Many clergymen, including Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda, became targets of violence and persecution due to their religious beliefs.

In March 1937, while serving in Barcelona, Father Josep was arrested and imprisoned for his refusal to renounce his faith. Despite facing harsh conditions and physical mistreatment, he remained steadfast in his devotion to God, offering support and encouragement to his fellow prisoners.

On March 17, 1937, Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda was martyred for his faith. He was executed by firing squad, a tragic event that cut short his life at the age of 38.

Following his death, the reputation for his holiness and unwavering commitment to his religious principles began to spread. The Catholic Church recognized his martyrdom, and on June 28, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI issued the decree of martyrdom, declaring him blessed. This recognition further highlighted the sacrifice and courage exhibited by Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda during a period of great turmoil.

Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony of Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda in Tarragona, Spain. This celebration not only honored his martyrdom but also served as a reminder of the persecution faced by the Catholic Church during the Spanish Civil War.

Today, the memory of Blessed Josep Mestre Escoda lives on as a testament to the strength and faith of those who endured persecution for their religious beliefs. Through his intercession, many continue to seek his guidance and help in their own spiritual journeys. His feast day is celebrated on March 17th, a date that marks both his martyrdom and his elevation to the ranks of the blessed by the Catholic Church.
