Biography

Blessed Josephina Gabriella Bonino, also known as Gabriela Giuseppina Bonino and Giuseppina Gabrielia Bonino, was born on 5th September 1843 in Savigliano, Italy. She came from a deeply religious and pious family that instilled in her a strong faith from an early age.

At the age of 12, Josephina moved to Turin, Italy. It was during her time there that she deeply felt the calling to dedicate her life to serving God and others. At the age of 18, she made a temporary vow of chastity, committing herself to a life of purity and devotion.

In 1876, when Josephina was 26 years old, she returned to her hometown of Savigliano to care for her ailing father. It was during this time that she underwent a successful back surgery in 1887, which restored her health. In gratitude for her recovery, Josephina made a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, where she experienced a profound spiritual encounter.

During her pilgrimage, Josephina felt a clear call from God to devote herself to caring for the poor, particularly orphans. Inspired by this calling, she founded the Sisters of the Holy Family in Savigliano in April 1881. This religious congregation was dedicated to serving orphans, the poor, and the elderly sick. Josephina served as the superior of the Sisters of the Holy Family for the rest of her life, leading by example and tirelessly ministering to those in need.

Under her guidance, the Sisters of the Holy Family established four additional houses to expand their charitable work. Through their efforts, countless lives were touched, and many individuals were provided with care, love, and a renewed sense of hope.

Blessed Josephina Gabriella Bonino was known for her deep spirituality, humility, and dedication to God and the poor. Her love for others was evident in her selfless actions and unwavering commitment to serving the marginalized. She possessed a profound gift of predicting events, and she accurately foretold the date of her own death.

On 8th February 1906, Josephina passed away peacefully in Savona, Italy, from natural causes. Her legacy of faith and service continues to inspire and touch the lives of many. Pope John Paul II recognized her holiness and her extraordinary life of virtue, and on 17th May 1995, she was beatified, being officially known as Blessed Josephina Gabriella Bonino.

Today, her feast day is celebrated on 8th February, a day to honor her memory, give thanks for her life, and seek her intercession. Blessed Josephina Gabriella Bonino stands as a shining example of selfless love, compassion, and dedication to God, reminding us to embrace the call to serve the most vulnerable members of society.
