Juan Mendibelz√∫a Ocerín was born on 23 November 1878 in Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain. From a young age, he showed a deep devotion to God and a desire to serve the Church. In pursuit of his vocation, he joined the Dominican Order and embarked on a path of religious formation and education.
As a Dominican priest, Fr. Juan dedicated himself to the preaching of the Gospel and the spiritual guidance of others. He tirelessly worked to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith, especially during a time of social and political unrest in Spain. Fr. Juan's commitment to his mission earned him respect and admiration among both his fellow religious brethren and the laity.
However, during the Spanish Civil War, Fr. Juan found himself in a turbulent and dangerous environment. Tragically, on 7 November 1936, Fr. Juan Mendibelz√∫a Ocerín was martyred in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid. Recognizing his martyrdom and the example he set, Pope Benedict XVI declared Fr. Juan Mendibelz√∫a Ocerín venerable on 26 June 2006. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, officially bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him. This beatification is a recognition of Fr. Juan's exceptional holiness and is an invitation for the faithful to seek his intercession and emulate his devotion to Christ.
