Biography

Blessed Luigi Caburlotto, born on 7 June 1817 in Venice, Italy, was the son of a Venetian gondolier. From a young age, Luigi felt a calling to serve the Lord and dedicated his life to the priesthood. He was ordained as a parish priest in the archdiocese of Venice on 24 September 1842.

Deeply inspired to help children and teenagers who had been abandoned or were homeless, Father Luigi devoted himself to the care and education of these vulnerable young souls in society. On 30 April 1850, he founded a school specifically for poor and abandoned girls. Together with two like-minded catechists, he went on to establish the Figlie di San Giuseppe (Daughters of Saint Joseph), a religious congregation of women dedicated to the service of God and the education of young girls.

Father Luigi's compassion and dedication did not stop there. In 1857, he established a home for poor girls, providing them with shelter, support, and education. Two years later, in 1859, he further expanded his efforts by establishing a comprehensive school complex for the poor. Through his relentless commitment, he also managed to establish a free college to ensure that education was accessible to those who could not afford it.

In 1869, Father Luigi was given the responsibility to reorganize and revitalize the Manin Institute, a skilled trade and craft school for men. Through his guidance and leadership, he breathed new life into the institute, enhancing its curriculum and ensuring that it continued to provide valuable skills and opportunities to those in need.

As his health began to decline, Father Luigi focused his attention on his home parish, where he conducted retreats for clergy and laity, nurturing their spiritual well-being. Despite his limited mobility, he continued to keep a close watch on the institutions he had established, although he was no longer able to physically visit them.

Blessed Luigi's life of selflessness and dedication came to an end on 9 July 1897, in Venice, Italy, as a result of natural causes. His influence and legacy, however, remained alive and active through the Daughters of Saint Joseph, who carried on his mission of caring for the poor and abandoned. The Daughters expanded their work beyond Italy and established themselves in Brazil, Kenya, and the Philippines, continuing to touch the lives of countless individuals in need.

Blessed Luigi Caburlotto's remarkable virtues and contributions to society were recognized by Pope John Paul II on 2 July 1994 when he declared him venerable. Pope Francis later beatified Luigi Caburlotto on 16 May 2015. A ceremony in Venice, Italy, commemorated this recognition, celebrating his life and the impact he had on the lives of many. On 1 March 2009, his remains were re-interred in a chapel at the parish church of San Sebastion in Venice, where his memory continues to inspire and guide those who embrace his spirit of compassion, education, and love for humanity.
