Death: November 2, 1889
Blessed Luigi Campidello, also known as Pio of Saint Aloysius, was born on 29 April 1868 in Trebbio di Possio Berni, Rimini, Italy. He was the fourth of six children born to Joseph and Filomena Belpani. Even as a child, Luigi showed exceptional piety and was regarded as a devoutly religious student.
Luigi's deep faith and commitment to the Catholic faith led him to become actively involved in teaching catechism to other children in his community. His passion for sharing the teachings of the Church and helping others grow in their faith was evident from an early age.
In pursuit of a religious vocation, Luigi joined the Passionists and, on 30 April 1884, took the name Pio. His dedication to the religious life was exemplary, characterized by his unwavering piety and devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pio's intense love for the Eucharist allowed him to find solace and strength in the presence of Christ, and his devotion to Mary inspired him to emulate her virtues in his own life.
Sadly, Pio's life was cut short due to his battle with tuberculosis. He passed away on 2 November 1889 in San Vito di Romagna, Forlè, Italy. Pio's burial took place in the churchyard of San Vito di Romagna, and his relics were later interred in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Casale in 1923.
Pope John Paul II recognized Pio's extraordinary virtues and declared him venerable on 21 March 1983. Recognizing his beatitude, Pope John Paul II then beatified Pio on 17 November 1985, officially honoring him and declaring him a Blessed of the Catholic Church.
Blessed Luigi Campidello, also known as Pio of Saint Aloysius, remains an inspiration to all who strive to live a devout and virtuous life. His strong faith, commitment to teaching others, and unwavering dedication to the Eucharist and Mary are a testament to his holiness and an example for believers to emulate.
