Biography

Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska, also known as Frances Siedliska, Franciszka Siedliska, and Mother Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd, was born on 12 November 1842 in Roszkowa Wola Castle, Rzeczyca, Poland. She was the eldest daughter of Adolf Adam Siedliski and Cecilia Marianna Morawska, who were wealthy and aristocratic landowners in the part of Poland that was occupied by Russia.

In her late teens, Franciszka Siedliska felt a strong call to religious life, despite her family's indifference towards Catholicism. This desire conflicted with her family's wishes, particularly her father's, who famously exclaimed that he would rather see her dead than lost to the cloister. Despite their objections, Franciszka pursued her religious vocation with determination and perseverance.

On 1 May 1884, she founded the religious congregation known as the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Taking the name Sister Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd, she dedicated her life to serving the needs of others, particularly focusing on the care and education of orphaned children. The community she founded grew rapidly and spread its mission to various parts of Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska was known for her extensive work in establishing and managing schools, orphanages, and hospitals. She had a deep understanding of the challenges faced by families, particularly the difficulties experienced by children who had lost their parents. Through her compassionate service, she sought to provide them with loving care and a stable upbringing.

Despite her tireless efforts, Mother Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd faced numerous trials and tribulations throughout her life. However, her unwavering faith and trust in divine providence allowed her to overcome these challenges. She exemplified an exceptional and heroic virtue, which was recognized by Pope John Paul II in the decree of heroic virtues on 29 April 1980, leading to her being granted the title of Venerable.

On 21 November 1902, Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska passed away in Rome, Italy due to peritonitis. Her legacy of love and service to God and humanity continues to inspire countless individuals around the world. In recognition of her holiness and the impact of her work, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 23 April 1989, acknowledging her as a blessed figure within the Catholic Church.

Blessed Maria Franciszka Siedliska's feast day is celebrated on 21 November each year, allowing the faithful to honor her life and to seek her intercession for their own spiritual journeys. Her example serves as a reminder of the profound impact that one person can have on the lives of others through their selfless dedication to God and the service of humanity.
