Biography

Blessed Marie Therese of Saint Joseph, also known as Anna Maria Tauscher van den Bosch, Maria Theresia of Saint Joseph, and Mary Teresa of Saint Joseph, was born on 19 June 1855 in Sandow, Mark Brandenburg, East Prussia (modern Poland). She was the daughter of a Lutheran Superintendent but later converted to Catholicism, joining the Church on 30 October 1888.

After her conversion, Anna Maria entered religious life as a nun and took the name Maria Theresia of Saint Joseph. In 1891, she founded a home for neglected children in Berlin, Germany. The young women who volunteered their time there eventually formed the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, with Mother Mary Teresa guiding them as their spiritual leader.

Mother Mary Teresa was known for her deep commitment to prayer and her unwavering faith. She not only relied on her spiritual practices but also put her faith into action, serving as a source of comfort, care, and guidance for those in need. She founded homes, nurseries, and day care centers for children and the elderly, recognizing the importance of providing love and support to all generations. Through her extensive correspondence, she reached out to people far and wide, offering spiritual advice and encouragement.

Mother Mary Teresa's compassion extended to the abandoned, immigrants, and those living in poverty. She worked tirelessly to help alleviate their suffering and restore their dignity. Her Congregation continues her work today, spreading across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, providing assistance to communities in need.

Blessed Marie Therese of Saint Joseph's life was characterized by her deep devotion to God and her love for humanity. She dedicated herself to serving others, finding joy in selflessly giving of herself for the betterment of those around her. Mother Mary Teresa continued her charitable work until her death on 20 September 1938 in Sittard, Limburg, Netherlands, where she passed away peacefully from natural causes.

Her exemplary life of faith and service was recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 20 December 2002, she was venerated by Pope John Paul II. Later, on 13 May 2006, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, acknowledging her heroic virtues and sanctity. The beatification recognition was celebrated at Roermond, Netherlands, where her influence and legacy continue to inspire others to this day.
