Blessed Mary Magdalene Martinengo, also known as Margarita Martinengo and Maria Maddalena, was born on October 5, 1687, in Brescia, Italy. She was born into the Italian nobility but suffered a deep loss when her mother passed away when Mary was just five months old. This early experience had a profound impact on her and led her to develop an intense religious devotion and a life dedicated to prayer.
At the age of 18, Mary Magdalene joined the Capuchin Poor Clares of Santa Maria della Neve in Brescia. After completing her novitiate, she professed her religious vows in 1706, committing herself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Mary Magdalene's deep spirituality, holiness, and commitment to prayer were quickly recognized within the convent.
Due to her exemplary life and strong leadership qualities, Mary Magdalene was appointed as prioress of the community twice during her time in the convent. Additionally, she served several years as a novice mistress, guiding and instructing those who were new to the religious life. Her dedication to her role as a religious superior was marked by her compassion and care for her sisters, as well as her commitment to their spiritual growth and well-being.
Blessed Mary Magdalene Martinengo had a particular devotion to Christ Crucified, and she actively worked to promote this devotion among her fellow sisters and the wider community. She believed in the importance of personal sacrifice and penance as a means to draw closer to the Lord. Mary Magdalene's own life became an example to those around her, inspiring others to embrace a life of self-denial and service to God.

Pope Pius VI recognized her heroic virtues on May 5, 1778, and she was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on June 3, 1900, for her extraordinary faith, religious observance, and dedication to the religious life.
Blessed Mary Magdalene Martinengo remained in the convent for the rest of her life, living out her vocation with great fidelity and humility. She passed away on July 27, 1737, in Brescia, Italy, at the age of 49, from natural causes.
