Biography
Blessed Maximiano Dronda Leoz, also known as Alipio José, was a devout monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 8 June 1916 in Ustárroz, Navarra, Spain. From an early age, Maximiano demonstrated a strong devotion to his faith, and his desire to serve God led him to join the Marist Brothers.
Maximiano's time as a religious brother was marked by his unwavering commitment to the principles of his order. The Marist Brothers are dedicated to the education and formation of young people, and Maximiano embraced this mission wholeheartedly. With his gentle and compassionate nature, he inspired those around him and left a lasting impact on the students he taught.
During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Maximiano's dedication to his faith and his vocation faced many challenges. The war, characterized by intense political and religious conflict, created a
hostile environment for members of religious orders. Maximiano, however, remained steadfast in his commitment, serving as a shining example of faith and perseverance.
Tragically, the Spanish Civil War claimed the life of Maximiano on 8 September 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. He was martyred for his refusal to renounce his faith and his commitment to the Marist Brothers. His death was a powerful testament to his deep devotion to God and his unwavering conviction in the face of persecution.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Maximiano was venerated on 3 June 2013 by Pope Francis, who signed the decree of martyrdom. Further acknowledging his exemplary life and sacrifice, he was beatified by Pope Francis on 13 October 2013.
