Biography

Blessed Mikel Beltoja, also known as Father Mikel Beltoja, was born on 9 May 1935 in Beltoj, a village near Shkodrô in Albania. He received his theological training under the guidance of Bishop Ernest √áoba of Shkodrô, who recognized Mikel's deep devotion and commitment to his faith.

On 8 December 1961, Mikel Beltoja was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult. He dedicated his life to serving the people and spreading the message of Christ's love and redemption.

In March 1967, the Communist government in Albania closed down all churches, suppressing religious freedom and persecuting Christians. Despite these oppressive conditions, Father Mikel remained steadfast in his faith and continued his ministry. He embarked on a mission of hope, travelling from village to village to minister to the people, bringing solace and conducting covert Masses wherever possible.

Father Mikel's courage and unwavering dedication to his faith did not go unnoticed by the authorities. On 19 April 1973, he was arrested in Beltoje, Albania, and imprisoned for several months. During his time in captivity, he endured brutal torture, yet he maintained his resolve and faith.

Finally, he was granted a trial, which he utilized as an opportunity to denounce the anti-Christian persecutions conducted by the Communist regime. Father Mikel fearlessly spoke out against the oppressors, advocating for religious freedom and proclaiming the inalienable rights of believers.

The Communist authorities, threatened by his outspokenness and influence, sentenced Father Mikel Beltoja to death. On 10 February 1974, he was executed by firing squad in Shkodrô, Albania, sealing his martyrdom and his place among the faithful who gave their lives for the Gospel.

Blessed Mikel Beltoja's life and sacrifice have not been forgotten. His unwavering faith and courageous witness during a dark period of Albanian history serve as an inspiration to believers around the world. In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis proclaimed him venerable on 26 April 2016, acknowledging his heroic virtues and sanctity.

On 5 November 2016, Pope Francis further honored Mikel Beltoja by beatifying him at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania. Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony, highlighting Father Mikel's exemplary life and the magnitude of his sacrifice for the Catholic faith.

Blessed Mikel Beltoja stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring power of faith, particularly in the face of persecution and adversity. Catholics commemorate his feast day on 10 February each year, celebrating his life and drawing inspiration from his unwavering dedication to Christ and the Church.
