Biography

Blessed Mikel Suma, also known as Gaspôr, was born on 23 March 1897 in Shkodrô, Albania. He displayed a deep interest in scholarly pursuits from a young age and pursued his studies in philosophy and theology at various renowned institutions, including the seminary in Shkodrô, the Austrian cities of Vienna, Graz, and Lankowitz, as well as Genoa, Italy.

Following his ordination as a priest in Genoa on 24 July 1921, Father Mikel Suma embraced the Franciscan way of life and became a dedicated Friar Minor. He devoted himself to the education and formation of future priests, teaching at the seminary in his hometown of Shkodrô.

Father Mikel Suma's unwavering faith and commitment to his calling did not go unnoticed by the authorities in Albania, who were hostile towards religion, particularly during the Communist regime that took hold in the country. On 24 May 1948, he was imprisoned for his steadfast adherence to the Catholic faith.

Despite the difficult conditions of his imprisonment, Father Mikel Suma remained resolute in his beliefs. He was subjected to a show trial, which aimed to discredit his devotion and undermine the Church's influence. However, he courageously defended his faith and refused to renounce his beliefs.

Tragically, Father Mikel Suma's imprisonment took a toll on his health, and he developed cancer while incarcerated. His suffering was compounded by the harsh conditions of the prison. On 16 April 1950, he breathed his last breath at the Great Prison in Shkodrô, Albania.

The martyrdom of Father Mikel Suma was recognized by the Vatican, and Pope Francis declared him Blessed on 5 November 2016. The beatification ceremony was held at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Mikel Suma's life serves as a testament to his unwavering faith, even in the face of persecution and suffering. His dedication to the Church and his country, along with his commitment to his vocation as a priest, continues to inspire believers around the world. His feast day is celebrated on 16 April, the day of his martyrdom.

May the intercession of Blessed Mikel Suma strengthen and guide all those who face adversity for their faith, and may his memory serve as a reminder of the enduring power of courage and devotion.
