Biography

Blessed Milagros Ortells Gimeno, also known as simply Milagros Ortells, was a Franciscan Capuchin Poor Clare nun who was martyred in the Spanish Civil War. She is remembered and venerated for her unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution. Her feast day is celebrated on 20th November.

Milagros Ortells was born on 29th November 1882 in Valencia, Spain. From a young age, she displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve others. In pursuit of her calling, she entered the religious order of the Franciscan Capuchin Poor Clares, where she embraced a life of poverty, humility, and prayer.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Milagros Ortells found herself caught up in the violent persecution of Catholics. Despite the dangers surrounding her, she remained steadfast in her faith and continued to provide solace and support to those in need.

Tragically, on 20th November 1936, Milagros Ortells was martyred in Picadero de Paterna, Valencia, Spain. She faced her death with unwavering courage and forgiveness, refusing to renounce her beliefs even in the face of imminent danger. Her martyrdom serves as a testament to her deep dedication to Christ and her commitment to the Catholic faith.

In recognition of her martyrdom, Milagros Ortells was venerated and declared Blessed on 20th December 1999 by Pope John Paul II. Her beatification took place on 11th March 2001, with Pope John Paul II bestowing this honor upon her.
