Biography

Blessed Narcis Serra Rovira, also known as Brother Ramon Eloi, was a revered member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on May 1, 1876, in Quart, Girona, Spain. Throughout his life, Brother Narcis dedicated himself to the service of God and education, particularly among the youth.

Brother Narcis joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de la Salle, which focused on educating children and promoting the Christian faith. He lived a life of deep devotion and simplicity, committed to nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of his students.

During the chaotic period of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, religious persecution became rampant, with countless individuals targeted for their faith. Brother Narcis, known as Brother Ramon Eloi, courageously chose to remain steadfast in his commitment to Catholicism.

Tragically, on July 27, 1936, in Balsareny, Barcelona, Spain, Brother Narcis Serra Rovira was martyred for refusing to renounce his religious beliefs. He faced persecution and violence with unwavering faith, earning him a place among the countless martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their dedication to Christ.

In recognition of his steadfast faith and ultimate sacrifice, Brother Narcis Serra Rovira was venerated on June 22, 2004, when Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom. His beatification ceremony took place on October 28, 2007, presided over by Pope Benedict XVI, who acknowledged Brother Narcis' exceptional virtues and martyrdom.
