Blessed Nevolo Of Faenza, also known as Nevolo of Tavensia, Nevolone, Novellone, and Nevolonius, was born in the 13th century in Faenza, Italy. He was the son of a craftsman, and initially led a dissolute life as a layman cobbler, engaging in worldly activities during his youth and early married life.
At the age of 24, Blessed Nevolo fell seriously ill, which led him to re-evaluate his life and seek spiritual transformation. He experienced a profound conversion, repenting for his previous way of living, and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to God, penance, and prayer. In the course of his conversion, he joined the Franciscan Order as a tertiary, embracing the values of poverty, humility, and love for all of God's creation.
Blessed Nevolo's conversion also had a significant impact on his wife, whom he successfully converted to a more active and devout faith. Together, they embarked on a transformative journey of faith and service, devoting themselves to acts of charity and compassion towards the poor and the needy. However, his generosity towards the less fortunate eventually caused financial difficulties that nearly ruined his business.
Over the years, Blessed Nevolo became known for his piety, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the spiritual life. He undertook numerous pilgrimages to various holy sites, including an impressive eleven journeys to the renowned pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela. These pilgrimages not only strengthened his own faith but also inspired others with his example of devotion and commitment.
Following the death of his wife, Blessed Nevolo embraced the calling to live a solitary life as a hermit. He joined the Camaldolese order, a branch of the Benedictines, and took up residence at the monastery of San Maglorio in Faenza, Italy. Within the monastic community, his reputation for holiness and wisdom continued to increase, attracting many who sought his counsel and guidance.
Blessed Nevolo passed away on 27 July 1280 in Faenza, Italy, of natural causes. He was laid to rest in the cathedral of San Pietro in Faenza. Such was his reputation as a saintly figure that, by 1282, an increasing number of pilgrims flocked to his tomb. To maintain order, guards were posted to regulate the flow of visitors paying their respects and seeking spiritual intercession.
The cult of Blessed Nevolo Of Faenza grew over time, with many individuals venerating him for his exemplary life and the spiritual influence he exerted. His beatification took place on 4 June 1817 by Pope Pius VII, who recognized his remarkable virtues and approved the confirmation of his cultus.
