Biography

Blessed Orlando of Vallombrosa, also known as Orlando da Vallombrosa, was a notable lay-brother in the Vallombrosan Order during the 13th century. He was recognized for his exceptional abilities as an exorcist, through which he confronted and expelled evil spirits.

Unfortunately, little is known about Orlando's early life and background. His exact date of birth remains unknown to us. However, his unwavering dedication to his religious calling and his remarkable contributions to the spiritual well-being of others have left a lasting legacy.

Blessed Orlando served in the Vallombrosan Order, which was a religious community founded in 1039 by St. John Gualberto. The order sought to follow a strict observance of the Benedictine Rule and sought a monastic lifestyle that emphasized prayer, study, and manual labor. Orlando, as a lay-brother, would have played a crucial role in supporting the religious community in various practical tasks.

What distinguishes Orlando from his fellow Vallombrosans was his renowned reputation as an exorcist. He possessed a unique ability to confront and combat demonic forces that plagued individuals and communities. Subsequently, in 1604, a chapel was dedicated to house the enshrined relics of Blessed Orlando and his fellow Vallombrosans.

The enduring significance of Blessed Orlando was further recognized on the 21st of August, 1600, when he was beatified by Bishop Alessandro de Medici. This official declaration approved the cultus (or public devotion) of Blessed Orlando, allowing the faithful to seek his intercession and honor his memory through prayers and veneration.

Although many details of his life may remain veiled in mystery, Blessed Orlando of Vallombrosa continues to be revered as a spiritual guide and intercessor. His humble commitment to his religious calling and his powerful ministry as an exorcist have earned him a place of honor and respect within the Catholic Church.
