Biography

Blessed Pedro María Ramírez Ramos, known for his martyrdom, was born on 23 October 1899 in La Plata, Huila, Colombia. He was the son of Ramón Ramírez Flórez and Isabel Ramos. At the young age of one day, he was baptized and embarked on a journey that would lead him to a life dedicated to serving God.

Feeling a calling to the priesthood, Pedro began his studies on 4 October 1915 in the diocese of Garzón, Colombia. However, in 1920, he started to have doubts about his vocation and took a break from the seminary. Over the next few years, he lived as a single man and worked as a choir director in various places, while constantly discerning his true vocation. His discernment process was not without challenges, as he suffered from severe headaches during this time.

In 1928, with the assistance of a pious female friend, Pedro felt that he was indeed called to the priesthood and decided to return to his studies. He was ordained a priest on 21 June 1930. After his ordination, he served as a parish priest in several locations. He began his ministry in the Chaparral region and later moved to Cunday, Colombia in 1934. In 1943, he was assigned as a parish priest in El Fresno, Colombia, and in 1948, he was transferred to Armero, Colombia.

It was during his time in Armero that the Colombian civil war, known as La Violencia, broke out. Father Pedro's parishioners feared for his safety and attempted to smuggle him out of the area. The Socialist Colombian Liberal Party blamed him for the killing of their leader, which led to the eruption of the conflict. In his unwavering dedication to his flock, Pedro refused to leave, believing that his parishioners would need him during the turbulent times.

On the fateful afternoon of 10 April 1948, members of the Colombian Liberal Party stormed his church, interrupting Father Pedro as he was finalizing his will. Accusing him of various offenses, they dragged him to the town square of Armero. There, he was brutally murdered, hanged, and beaten with a machete as an act of violence and intimidation. His body was then left to hang for a period as a warning to others before being discarded in a ditch near the local cemetery.

Responsibility for the atrocities committed against Father Pedro did not go unaddressed. Government officials took his remains on 21 April 1948 to perform an autopsy. Eventually, in May of the same year, his body was released to his grieving parents. They arranged for his burial in the family cemetery plot in La Plata, Huila, Colombia.

Blessed Pedro María Ramírez Ramos was recognized for his martyrdom and venerated by the Catholic Church. On 7 July 2017, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his sacrifice for the faith. On 8 September 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, a ceremony that took place at the Parque Temático Las Malocas in Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia, with the Pope himself as the chief celebrant.

The life of Blessed Pedro María Ramírez Ramos serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his priestly vocation and his selfless dedication to the wellbeing of his parishioners, even in the face of grave danger and personal persecution. May his memory continue to inspire and his intercession guide all those in need.
