Biography

Blessed Pedro Ruiz Ortega, also known as "Blessed Peter the Martyr," was a professed cleric in the Sons of the Holy Family, a religious congregation founded by Saint José Manyanet y Vives. Pedro was born on January 14, 1912, in the town of Vilviestre de Muñó, located in the province of Burgos, Spain.

From a young age, Pedro displayed a strong devotion to his faith and a calling to serve God. Inspired by his desire to deepen his spiritual journey, he joined the seminary and began his studies, preparing himself for the priesthood.

During those turbulent times that marked the onset of the Spanish Civil War, Pedro faced immense challenges. As the persecutions against Catholics intensified, he determined to escape to Rome, Italy, in order to continue his studies and serve the church. Unfortunately, his efforts were thwarted, and he was captured and imprisoned.

Despite the hardships he endured, including physical and emotional torture, Pedro never wavered in his commitment to his faith. His unwavering loyalty to Christ and the church earned him the title of martyr. On March 4, 1937, in the town of Montcada, located in the province of Barcelona, Spain, Pedro was ultimately executed for refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs.

Pedro Ruiz Ortega's body has not been located, leaving behind a mystery surrounding its whereabouts. However, his memory remains alive in the hearts of the faithful who honor his sacrifice for the sake of his faith. His feast days are celebrated on March 4 and April 12 in some calendars.

In recognition of his steadfast devotion and martyrdom, Pedro was venerated by Pope Benedict XVI on May 10, 2012, with the decree of martyrdom. Then, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, elevating him to the rank of Blessed within the Catholic Church.

Blessed Pedro Ruiz Ortega serves as an inspiration for all believers, reminding us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith even in the face of adversity. His life and sacrificial death continue to inspire countless individuals to live their faith boldly and without compromise.
