Biography

Blessed Pedro Sánchez Barba, also known as Pedro Sánchez Barba, was a faithful Catholic priest and a member of the Secular Franciscans. He was born on 1st June 1895 in Llano de Brujas, Murcia, Spain. Growing up in a devout family, Pedro felt a calling to the priesthood early in his life and dedicated himself to the service of God and the Church.

After completing his seminary studies, Pedro was ordained a priest for the diocese of Cartagena, Spain. Known for his humility, sincere devotion, and love for the poor, Father Pedro joyfully embraced his priestly duties. He served in various parishes in the region, bringing the message of Christ's love to all those he encountered.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Pedro Sánchez Barba fearlessly defended his faith and stood firm in his commitment to the Gospel. As the war raged on, religious persecution was rampant, and many Catholic priests and religious were targeted for their unwavering loyalty to the Church.

Tragically, on 4th September 1936, in El Esparragal, Murcia, Spain, Father Pedro Sánchez Barba became a martyr for his faith. Refusing to renounce his allegiance to Christ and the Catholic Church, he embraced his fate with courage and unwavering faith. He faced his executioners with forgiveness and prayed for their conversion, exemplifying the teachings of Christ until his last breath.

The life and martyrdom of Father Pedro Sánchez Barba did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. His heroic witness to the Gospel and steadfast love for God stood as an inspiration to countless believers. On 10th December 2010, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed him venerable, recognizing his life of exemplary virtue. Then on 13th October 2013, Pope Francis declared him blessed, further affirming his sanctity and inviting the faithful to seek his intercession.

Blessed Pedro Sánchez Barba's feast day is celebrated on 4th September each year, the day of his martyrdom. Through his life and death, he continues to inspire the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity.
