Death: January 12, 1845
Blessed Pierrefrançois Jamet, also known as Peter Francis Jamet, was born on September 12, 1762, in Fresnes, Aisne, France. He was one of eight children born into a wealthy farm family. Showing great promise, he studied at the College of Vire and later at the University of Caen.
On September 22, 1787, Jamet was ordained in the diocese of Bayeux, France. He began his priestly ministry as a chaplain and confessor to the Daughters of the Good Savior in Caen in 1790. However, his pursuit of further theological studies was hindered by the French Revolution, which abolished the teaching of theology.
During this tumultuous time, the anti-Church Revolutionary authorities demanded an oath of loyalty, which Jamet refused to take. As a result, he was imprisoned, and the Daughters' community was dispersed. Even while incarcerated, Father Pierre continued to secretly minister to the sisters and other covert Catholics, often conducting Mass in hiding.
After the Revolution subsided, Father Pierre dedicated himself to the revitalization and restoration of the Daughters of the Good Savior. He played a pivotal role in rebuilding the community and restoring its spiritual life. Additionally, he helped found a school that focused on new teaching methods for the education of the deaf.
Father Pierre's influence extended beyond the religious sphere. He served as the Rector of the University of Caen from 1822 to 1830, overseeing its administration and academic affairs. In recognition of his outstanding charitable endeavors and contributions to society, he was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1827.
Blessed Pierrefrançois Jamet died on January 12, 1845, in Caen, Calvados, France, as a result of natural causes. He was buried in the motherhouse of the Daughters of the Good Savior in Caen.
His life of extraordinary virtue and holiness was recognized by Pope John Paul II on March 21, 1985, who declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. On May 10, 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Pierrefrançois Jamet, acknowledging his beatifiable status.
Blessed Pierrefrançois Jamet's life serves as an inspiration to many, exemplifying deep faith, perseverance in the face of adversity, and unwavering commitment to the service of others. His legacy as the Second Founder of the Institute of the Good Savior, his role in the education of the deaf, and his contributions to the religious and academic communities continue to impact and inspire people to this day.
