Blessed Reyes Us Hernández, also known as Blessed Reyes Hernández, was a married layman born on 1939 in Macalajau, Uspantán, Quiché, Guatemala. He was a devout Catholic and an active member of his local parish in the Diocese of Quiché.
Reyes Us Hernández dedicated his life to serving God and his community. On 21 November 1980, Reyes Us Hernández was brutally murdered by government forces in Macalajau, Uspantán, Quiché. His death was a devastating blow to his family, community, and the Church. However, his martyrdom became a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel.
Recognizing the immense sacrifice and heroic witness of Reyes Us Hernández, he was venerated on 23 January 2020 by Pope Francis, who decreed his martyrdom. This formal recognition by the Holy Father further underscored the significance of his life and death in the service of God and the Church.
On 23 April 2021, Pope Francis beatified Reyes Us Hernández during a special ceremony held in Santa Cruz del Quiché, Guatemala. This beatification recognition elevated him to the status of "Blessed," affirming his exceptional holiness and exemplary life as a lay martyr.
Today, Blessed Reyes Us Hernández serves as a shining example of courage and faith for Catholics around the world. His life stands as a powerful reminder of the price that some must pay for their commitment to justice, charity, and the Gospel.
