Biography

Blessed Robert Sutton, born in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, was a Protestant minister and the rector of Lutterworth in Leicestershire, England in 1571. However, his life took a significant turn when he converted to Catholicism, primarily influenced by his younger brother William, who later became a Jesuit priest.

In 1576, Robert, along with his younger brother Abraham, traveled to Douai, France, where they pursued their studies. It was during this time that Robert decided to dedicate his life to the priesthood, and he was ordained in February 1577 for the apostolic vicariate of England.

Robert Sutton returned to England on 19 March 1578, during a period of intense persecution against Catholics under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Knowing the risks involved, he bravely chose to minister covertly to the persecuted Catholics, providing them spiritual guidance and sacraments during these difficult times.

However, his tireless work did not go unnoticed, and he soon became a target of the authorities. He was arrested and imprisoned for the crime of priesthood, remaining steadfast in his faith despite the harsh conditions he endured. His unwavering commitment and dedication to nurturing the faith of his fellow Catholics inspired many.

Tragically, on 27 July 1588, Blessed Robert Sutton was hanged in Stafford, Staffordshire, England, becoming one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales. His sacrifice and martyrdom served as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to the Catholic Church.

After his execution, a miraculous occurrence took place. A forefinger and thumb were miraculously recovered from his remains, and they became revered relics. The thumb of Blessed Robert Sutton is currently enshrined at Stonyhurst College in Hurst Green, Lancashire, England.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II decreed the veneration of Blessed Robert Sutton on 10 November 1986. A year later, on 22 November 1987, the same pope beatified him, officially recognizing his sanctity and his status as a blessed.

Blessed Robert Sutton's life exemplifies the strength of faith, even in the face of persecution and hardship. His selfless dedication to ministering to Catholics during challenging times remains an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding them of the importance of faith and the sacrifices sometimes required to uphold it.
