Biography

Blessed Rolando Rivi, also known as Rolando Maria Rivi, was born on 7 January 1931 in San Valentino di Castellarano, a small village in the province of Reggio Emilia, Italy. He was born into a humble farming family, and from an early age, Rolando displayed a deep religious devotion and a strong desire to serve God.

Recognizing his calling to the priesthood, Rolando entered the seminary in the diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla. He had a fervent desire to become a missionary priest and dedicate his life to spreading the message of Christ. Despite his young age, Rolando's commitment and spiritual maturity were evident to those around him, and he quickly became well-liked by his fellow seminarians and superiors.

Tragically, during the final days of World War II, on 10 April 1945, at the tender age of 14, Rolando was abducted by Communist partisans who were hostile towards his Christian faith. He was subjected to unimaginable abuse and torture over the course of three days. Faced with relentless torment, Rolando remained steadfast in his love for Christ and refused to renounce his Christian beliefs.

On 13 April 1945, in a wooded area near Piani di Monchio in Modena, Italy, Rolando was mercilessly shot and martyred for his faith. His mutilated body was left behind as a testimony to the brutal persecution he endured for his unwavering devotion to Christ.

Rolando Rivi's martyrdom at such a young age deeply impacted the local community and the Church as a whole. His heroic witness to the faith and his unwavering commitment to Christ inspired countless people, both young and old, to persevere in their own faith journeys.

After his death, Rolando Rivi was buried in Piani di Monchio but was later re-interred in the graveyard of his parish church of Saint Valentine on 29 May 1945. Later, on 26 June 1997, his remains were again re-interred in the church of Saint Valentine, where they now rest as a permanent reminder of his sacrifice.

Recognizing the sanctity and martyrdom of Rolando Rivi, his cause for beatification was introduced, and on 27 March 2013, Pope Francis declared him venerable. On 5 October 2013, Pope Francis himself beatified Rolando Rivi in a solemn ceremony held in Modena, Italy. The beatification recognition was celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Amato, affirming the exemplary life of faith, devotion, and sacrifice exhibited by Rolando.

Blessed Rolando Rivi serves as a powerful example of courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire people worldwide to remain faithful to their Christian beliefs and to embrace the path of holiness even in the most challenging circumstances.
