Biography

Blessed Rusticus of Vallombrosa, also known as Rustico, was a devoted friend, co-worker, and spiritual student of Saint John Gualbert. He was born on either November 6 or March 12, although historical records vary on the exact date, in 1092 at the Vallombrosa abbey, located near the town of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Italy. Rusticus spent his entire life dedicated to his faith and the monastic life.

Rusticus became a monk at the renowned Vallombrosa monastery and served for many years as the treasurer of the house. It was during this time that he forged a close bond with Saint John Gualbert, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church known for his holiness. Rusticus greatly admired Saint John's wisdom and teachings, and he became a spiritual student under his guidance.

In 1068, Rusticus' commitment and devotion were recognized by Saint John, who chose him as the prior of the San Michele Arcangelo a Passignano abbey, located near Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. This appointment was a testament to Rusticus' spiritual growth and his ability to lead others in their spiritual journeys.

Tragically, Rusticus was present during Saint John Gualbert's final moments and administered the last sacraments to his beloved teacher. Following Saint John's passing, Rusticus succeeded him as abbot of Vallombrosa in 1073. This appointment was a testament to his leadership skills and his unwavering commitment to the values and principles of the monastic order.

In 1076, Rusticus was elected as the abbot-general of the Vallombrosan Congregation, a position he held for the remaining 16 years of his life. His dedication to the monastic life, along with his exemplary work and piety, earned him great esteem from Pope Urban II. Rusticus' leadership and wisdom during his tenure as abbot-general significantly contributed to the growth and influence of the Vallombrosan Congregation.

Blessed Rusticus of Vallombrosa's feast days are celebrated on November 6 and August 1 (as one of the Blessed of Vallombrosa). There are some calendars that also commemorate him on March 12. Throughout his life, Rusticus lived in accordance with his deep faith and displayed profound compassion, humility, and selflessness towards others.

Blessed Rusticus' relics were elevated to the altar in 1200, signifying his beatification. While his representation is unknown, his life and the impact he had on the Vallombrosan community are a testament to his sanctity.
