Blessed Severian Baranyk

Feast Day: June 28

Birth: July 18, 1889
Death: June 1, 1941
Blessed Severian Baranyk, also known as Severiano Baranyk, Severijan Baranyk, and Stepan Baranyk, was a Greek Catholic priest who dedicated his life to serving God and his community. Born on 18 July 1889 in Ukraine, he felt a deep calling to the priesthood from a young age.
Severian Baranyk entered the Krekhiv monastery of the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat on 24 September 1904, embracing a life of prayer, study, and service. After years of preparation, he made his final vows on 21 September 1910, committing himself fully to the religious life. His dedication and devotion were recognized, and on 14 February 1915, he was ordained as a priest.
Father Severian's commitment to his faith was unwavering throughout his life, even in the face of great adversity. In 1932, he became the prior of the Basilian monastery in Drohobych, where he served his community with love and compassion. However, the difficult times of political unrest would soon test his faith to the utmost.
On 26 June 1941, Father Severian was arrested by the NKVD for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. Sadly, he was never seen alive by outsiders again. Heartbreaking testimony later emerged from a young boy who claimed to have witnessed the tortured corpse of Father Severian, bearing a cross-shaped knife slash on his chest. This testimony has led many to believe that Father Severian was martyred for his faith.
The exact circumstances of Father Severian's death remain shrouded in darkness. It is believed that he perished in late June 1941 at Drohobych, Ukrainian Galicia, under the hands of the Soviets. His body was never found, and there is evidence suggesting that he may have been subjected to a gruesome fate, with some indicating that his body was boiled and served as soup to prisoners. These cruel acts only highlight the depth of persecution suffered by those who stood firm in their Catholic beliefs during this time.
The profound dedication and heroic witness of Father Severian Baranyk did not go unnoticed. On 24 April 2001, Pope John Paul II recognized his martyrdom with a decree, officially proclaiming him as Blessed Severian Baranyk. The beatification ceremony took place on 27 June 2001 in Ukraine, offering a moment of celebration and reflection on the life and sacrifice of this faithful servant of God.
Blessed Severian Baranyk continues to be venerated by the faithful, particularly on 28 June, the day associated with his feast. His life serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of faith even in the darkest of times and his unwavering commitment to his calling as a priest and servant of God. May his example inspire all who face challenges in living their faith with courage and conviction.
