Blessed Valentin Paquay, also known as Jan Louis Paquay, Joannes Ludovicus Paquay, Valentijn Paquay, Valentine Paquay, and Valentinus Paquay, was born on 17 November 1828 in Tongres, Limburg, Belgium, as Louis Paquay. He was the fifth of eleven children born to Hendrik Paquay and Anne Neven, a pious couple who instilled in their children a deep faith and a strong connection to the Church.
Louis pursued his education in literature at the College in Tongres. However, in 1845, he decided to follow his calling and entered Saint Trond Seminary. Unfortunately, his plans were interrupted when his father passed away unexpectedly in 1847. In response to this event, Louis left school and joined the Franciscan order. He made his vows on 4 October 1850, taking the name Valentine, and later resumed his studies.
Valentine Paquay was ordained on 10 June 1854 and was assigned to the monastery of Hasselt, Belgium, where he would live for the remainder of his life. Within the monastery, he held various roles such as sub-prior and prior of the house. From 1890 to 1899, he served as a Provincial Definitor, showcasing his dedication and leadership within the Franciscan community.
Blessed Valentin Paquay was widely known for his eloquent and captivating preaching. He possessed the exceptional ability to read a visitor's conscience, which made him a highly sought-after confessor and spiritual director. Valentin's writings were extensive as he consistently engaged in writing activities throughout his life.
Further emphasizing his faith, Valentin had a strong devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and he actively promoted frequent communion among the faithful. Additionally, he had a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and encouraged others, especially his fellow Franciscans, to embrace this devotion. Valentin's spirituality was marked by his daily recitation of the Way of the Cross, demonstrating his profound love for Christ's passion.
Valentin Paquay passed away on 1 January 1905 in Hasselt, Limburg, Belgium, due to natural causes. His life of holiness and virtue led to his veneration, which was officially recognized by Pope Paul VI on 4 May 1970 with a decree of heroic virtues. Then, on 9 November 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his exemplary life and the impact of his spiritual teachings on the faithful.
Blessed Valentin Paquay's legacy continues to inspire and guide many in their faith journey. He is remembered for his deep spirituality, his commitment to preaching, his writings, and his devotion to the Holy Eucharist and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His beatification serves as a testament to his sanctity and the profound impact he had on the Catholic Church.
