Biography

Blessed Victor Chumillasfernández, also known as Blessed Victor of Olmeda, was born on July 28, 1902, in Olmeda del Rey, Cuenca, Spain. He was the son of Alfonso and Catalina Chumillas-Fernández, devout and pious parents who raised six children in a strong Catholic environment. Victor was baptized just two days after his birth, marking the beginning of his lifelong spiritual journey.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck the family at a young age when Victor's father passed away. As the eldest son, Victor had to assume responsibilities to help support his family. Despite the challenges, his deep longing for religious life remained unwavering. He was particularly captivated by the inspiring stories of the Martyrs of Japan.

As a young layman, Victor started sharing the homilies he heard at Mass, serving as a passionate preacher in his local community. His commitment to spreading the Gospel led him to join the Franciscan Friar Minor novitiate on August 2, 1917, in Pastrana, Guadalajara, Spain. A year later, on August 4, 1918, he made his first profession in Avila, Spain, embracing the Franciscan way of life.

After completing his studies, Victor was ordained to the priesthood in Toledo, Spain, in 1925. Over the years, he taught and served as a rector in various Franciscan seminaries, influencing and nurturing the next generation of priests.

In 1931, amidst his ministerial duties, Blessed Victor took on additional responsibilities as the Guardian of Consuegra in Madrid, Spain. His dedication to spreading God's message knew no bounds, and he poured his efforts into managing, editing, publishing, and writing for the Franciscan magazines "Cruzada Seraphic" and "Hogar Antoniano" from 1931 to 1936.

Blessed Victor's zeal for understanding the connection between science, art, and religion prompted him to found the magazine "Comet." The publication featured insightful essays on these topics, aiming to bridge the gap between the secular and spiritual realms.

Not only was Blessed Victor an accomplished writer, but he was also known for his exceptional preaching and catechetical abilities. He had a special calling to minister to the sick and became a spiritual director for both Franciscan tertiaries and Poor Clare nuns, offering them guidance and support in their religious life.

Apart from his diverse talents in theology and ministry, Blessed Victor possessed a deep love for music and poetry. He served as a choir director and organist, skillfully composing hymns and poetic works that further nourished the faith of his fellow friars and those he ministered to.

However, the onset of the Spanish Civil War brought immense suffering for Blessed Victor and his Franciscan brothers. Just three days into the Francisco Franco regime, they were evicted from their convent. Subsequently, they were imprisoned and subjected to frequent relocations. Eventually, on August 16, 1936, in Boca de Balondillo, Fuente el Fresno, Ciudad Real, Spain, Blessed Victor and his companions met their martyrdom, martyred for their unwavering faith in the face of persecution.

Blessed Victor Chumillasfernández was buried in the village cemetery of Boca de Balondillo, where his earthly remains rest as a testament to his devoted service to God and the Church. On December 19, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his martyrdom, paving the way for his beatification, which took place on October 28, 2007, also by Pope Benedict XVI.

Today, Blessed Victor Chumillasfernández is duly venerated as a faithful martyr and an exemplar of the Franciscan Order. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire countless individuals, offering a profound example of unwavering faith, dedication to preaching the Gospel, and selfless service to others.
