Local people who discovered Willebald's lifeless body on the road in Bavaria ensured that he received a proper Christian burial. His burial site, however, quickly became associated with miraculous occurrences, with numerous reports of healing and other unexplained phenomena taking place there.
The remarkable reputation of Willebald's tomb attracted a significant following and the attention of the Church authorities. Subsequently, his relics were exhumed and enshrined in a dedicated chapel, which became a place of veneration for pilgrims seeking his intercession.
