Feast Day: April 16
Death: April 16, 1317
Blessed William Gnoffi, also known as Guglielmo Gnoffi, was born in 1256 to a noble family in Polizzi Generosa, Palermo, Italy. Despite his privileged upbringing, William felt a deep religious calling from a young age. He was known to have briefly indulged in sinful behavior as a teenager, but this experience served as a catalyst for his spiritual awakening.
At the age of 15, William made a bold decision and fled his family's estate to live as a hermit in the caves near the ruins of the monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian. During his time as a hermit, he practiced rigorous penance and dedicated himself to a life of holiness. His commitment to his faith drew the attention of many individuals seeking spiritual guidance, and he became renowned as a spiritual teacher.
William led a simple and austere life, relying solely on alms for sustenance. He often preached in the streets, sharing the message of God's love and mercy. Throughout his spiritual journey, Blessed William Gnoffi received numerous visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which further deepened his faith and inspired his devotion to her.
When he turned 20, William constructed a small church near his hermitage where he resided for the next eleven years. It was during this period that his reputation as a holy man spread rapidly, and people from far and wide began seeking his counsel and prayers.
Later in his life, William relocated to Castelbuono, Italy. Here, he received assistance from Count Alduiono Ventimiglia of Geraci in building the church of Santa Maria del Parto. William chose to spend the remainder of his days in a hermitage close to the church. His deep spirituality and miracles attributed to his intercession earned him widespread reverence in the region.
Blessed William Gnoffi was known for his extraordinary holiness and his ability to perform miracles. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, fasting, and self-denial. His love for God and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary were evident in his teachings and actions.
Blessed William Gnoffi passed away on 16th April 1317 in Castelbuono, Palermo, Italy, from natural causes. His remains were initially buried at the Santa Maria del Parto abbey in Castelbuono. However, in 1500, his relics were placed in a silver urn and enshrined in the Matrice Nuova church, which is part of the Santa Maria del Parto abbey. To this day, his relics are venerated and carried in procession each year during the memorial of Saint Anne.
After several centuries of devotion and widespread recognition of his sanctity, the bishop of Cefal√π, Italy, officially confirmed the acts of beatification for Blessed William in 1613. His life serves as an inspiring example of profound faith, repentance, and devotion to serving God and others.
